My name is Pramod Abichadani and I’m the CEO and founder of LocoRobo. I have a PhD in Robotics and I am a University Professor. I come from a very heavy academic background. Can this program be used in an after school program? LocoRobo’s curriculum is flexible and can be used in formal, rigorous classroom settings, for self-guided learning and everything in between. Our curriculum is currently used in After school programs that facilitate classroom style learning as well as through mentor / student one on one study.
How are teachers using this curriculum and in what types of classes? Teachers are incorporating LocoRobo curriculum in sections of core math, science and engineering courses, semester and year long elective Robotics courses. Some schools even have dedicated programing classes and are using our curriculum to teach Python programming.
Do the kits come already assembled or do the students build the robots? Our products come fully assembled. In this day and age, design is done digitally. Our LocoXtreme robots and LocoDrone controllers can be redesigned by students in CAD software and 3D printed.
Do I need to know how to program to teach this curriculum? LocoRobo addresses the situation of schools today — modern technology is advancing at a rapid pace and most schools aren’t in place to hire trained programming teachers. We have created a curriculum that provides teachers with little or no prior coding experience everything they need to get started learning and teaching Python.
How do you manage students moving at different paces? Our curriculum provides material appropriate for self-guided and team-based learning. We recommend pairing students up with similar skill levels and allowing students to move forward at their own pace/
Our current programming classes teach Java. Why should we switch to Python? Python is a much easier language to learn with than Java and more commonly used in commercial products.
We teach coding through code.org. Why would we switch to LocoRobo? Right now, Robotics is the most engaging way to teach coding because students test their programs in real time using lights, sounds, and motion. The feedback provided by hardware and physical task-oriented programming is way more exciting than computational outputs on the computer screen. Robotics, IoT (Internet-of-things) and Artificial Intelligence are the future.
What warranty and tech support does LocoRobo offer? Depending on the volume your school purchases, we offer 90 days to 6 months warranty on hardware. Following the 6 months,we offer repair services at a reasonable cost.
 LocoXtreme
 What’s the difference for the student between Explorer and Voyager? Explorer starts with GUI blocks and gently eases students into basic Python coding with Robotics. Voyager does not include GUI blocks at all. Voyager starts with Python and teaches students through intermediate Python and Robotics. The Voyager program is great for students with prior Robotics experience and older students (grade 8 and above), because of the math and physics concepts this program incorporates.
How many students per robot? Ideally, 1:1 ratio for at least a few weeks before students pair up on assignments and challenges. Two students per robot works well for collaborative learning. At three students per robot, we see engagement levels drop significantly.
How much material is there and what’s the duration of the program? We have designed our curriculum to be flexible for different length courses and it depends on how much time you can dedicate in your class. The LocoXtreme program can run for 1 week up to a full year.
Do the robots come with rechargeable batteries? The robots run on replaceable AA batteries.
What’s the battery life? 14 hrs continuous use, which typically lasts for 12 weeks in a classroom setting.
My school already has a Lego robotics program, how is this different? LocoRobo focuses much more on digital design and real-world coding. LocoRobo advances students beyond the bricks and blocks to modern robotics to prepare students for careers in the age when humans will be going to Mars. We offer a fully built, modern robot power packed with the same sensors used by commercial robots.
Why don’t the coding blocks have conditional statements? While we believe the coding blocks are great for beginners, our goal is to transition students into Python as soon as they are able to grasp it. We don’t encourage working with the blocks for too long — so we introduce conditionals in Python because once you introduce decision making, you can really do a lot with the robots.
How long does each lesson take? It varies depending both on the student and teacher level. On average, the lessons take between 45 – 90 minutes.
When you change the Python does it change the coding blocks? No. Our Live Coding conversion is one-way. We believe that once students start writing and editing Python, the transition to coding has begun and we discourage students going back to the blocks.
How can this program be run with just a few robots for the class? Many schools and after school programs are just looking for an introduction to Robotics and find value in experimenting with LocoXtreme in groups.
Can I run this program with iOS devices? Yes, students can work with the coding blocks in the iOS app to learn programming concepts and work on challenges. It is common for the K-4 classrooms to work solely with the coding blocks.
We would like to teach this program in multiple classes and grade levels. Do we need robots for each class? Robots can be shared across class periods and grade levels as long as the timing works out. Any device can connect to any robot. We recommend asking yourself what are the l=most robots you’ll need at any given moment and start there. A common model is to purchase a classroom set of robots while purchasing a license for each student to create and save their own work.
Are there different robots for each level? No, the LocoXtreme robot is used at all levels from K-2 to University. The curriculum for each level is where the difference lies.
How do you upload the code to the robot? With our BLE dongles, web app and LocoRobo Communicator software, students’ code can run on the robot wirelessly and immediately. There is no cumbersome uploading and waiting to test the students’ programs.
What are the system requirements? The lessons and LocoXtreme coding platform are accessed through the web. The following specs are required for running the LocoRobo Academy software for Windows and/or Mac:1) 4gb ram
2) 1.2Ghz+ dual core processor if 2014 or later, 2Ghz+ if older than 2014
3) Win 7 or newer
4) Mac 10.9+
Will Chromebooks work? Yes, the students can access the coding platform via the web and the LocoRobo Communicator is accessed through the Chrome store as an add-on.
Can we try the robots before we buy? LocoRobo offers a two-week trial with 1 LocoXtreme robot and access to the LocoRobo Academy. All we request is a signed rental agreement and standard credit card authorization, in case of accidental damage or loss.
What can knowledge should students be able to demonstrate by the end of the Explorer course? A basic knowledge of computational thinking, Python syntax and basic Python skills, sensor physics and sensor-based decision-making in Robotics.
What can knowledge should students be able to demonstrate by the end of the Voyager course? An in depth knowledge of beginner through intermediate Python programming concepts, how to write Python industry standard code, complex, sensor based robot behavior, sensor physics and basic statistics.
How long do the robots last? The robots are intended to last about 5 years. We are a 24 month old company and have yet to see robots that need a full replacement.
LocoRobo Academy
Does each student need their own license or…Can students share licenses? We recommend each student to have their own license and account to create and store their own work. Technically licenses can be shared and this increases the risk of students copying and overwriting each other’s work. Shared licenses are typically used in more informal, after school settings.
Does this software run on Linux? As of now, we do not have a Linux version of the LocoRobo Communicator.
What OS / devices are compatible with the LocoRobo Academy website? The software is web-based and can run in any modern browser.
If the LocoRobo Academy licenses last one year and our students are turning over at the semester, do we need licenses for every student for the year? LocoRobo can reset your licenses and clear out your programs when a new semester begins. Just be sure to renew your subscriptions on an annual basis.
Is there any way I can look at what’s in the LocoRobo Academy? We offer a two-week trial access to the LocoRobo Academy where you can have a look at the LocoXtreme coding platform and lesson library for any product.
LocoDrone
What knowledge can the students expect to demonstrate by the end of the course? Principles of physics of flight (aerodynamics), uses of accelerometer, barometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope in flight control, drone control algorithms, statistics and visualization of real-time sensor data, gesture and joystick control programming using Python, intermediate Python programming skills.
How long does each lesson take? Approximately 45mins to 90 mins
What’s the battery life of the drone? 5-7 minutes. Extra batteries are available for purchase.
How long does the battery take to charge? 20-45 minutes depending on the life cycle stage of the battery
What are the system requirements? Python based on Anaconda environment. Windows 10 is ideal. Windows Vista or newer, macOS 10.7+, or Linux
Can we use Chromebooks? As of now no. There may be support in the future, however, we recommend a more substantial device such as Windows or Mac when working at this level of Robotics.
Is LocoXtreme a prerequisite for LocoDrone? No. Beginners can benefit from the LocoXtreme Explorer curriculum before advancing to either LocoXtreme Voyager or LocoDrone. Students with some prior coding knowledge and/or more advanced math and physics knowledge should be able to enter the LocoDrone curriculum without prior LocoXtreme experience.
